In November, the Constitutional Court began to examine the legitimacy of the death penalty, after a capital sentence was pronounced by the Court of Appeal of Saranda on Flamur Rokajit convicted of murder. On that occasion, the Albanian Republican Party asked the Constitutional Court to apply the death penalty. "The Republican Party emphasizes that before abolishing the death penalty Government should reduce criminality and create conditions for a normal situation for citizens," Secretary Aleksander Garuli declared. But on December 10, the Constitutional Court stated the death penalty was unconstitutional.
