In October 2000, U.N. special representative on Iran, Maurice Copithorne's report to the General Assembly singled out the "accelerating attack on the press" as one of the most dramatic developments in Iran between January and July of 2000, it also noted the lack of progress in judicial reform and the execution of 130 people in that same period.
The Iranian government is bound by the Principles on Effective Prevention and Investigation of Extra-legal, Arbitrary and Summary Executions, adopted by the UN Economic and Social Council and endorsed by the UN General Assembly on 15th December 1989.
Iran has consistently refused to allow a visit by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to Iran.
