in Punta Gorda, Stephen Smith was sentenced in the death of Darla Lathrem who was beaten at the Charlotte Correctional Institution in 2003. She was the first female prison guard killed in the line of duty in Florida.
Authorities said Smith and 2 other inmates planned their escape for weeks.
Lathrem, 38, was the only supervisor on duty that night as 5 inmates worked on renovations to a prison building.
Dwight Eaglin attacked 2 fellow inmates with a hammer, killing 1 of them. He then persuaded Lathrem to go to a broom closet with him and he beat her to death. He was sentenced to death on March 31 (see). A 3rd inmate, Michael Jones agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence.
