in Rancho Cucamonga, Joe Henry Abbott was sentenced to death for murdering Samuel Saenz, a security guard, during a bank robbery.
Judge Craig Kamansky handed down the sentence.
Abbott ambushed Saenz, 25, on Oct. 30, 2000, in front of horrified customers at a Bank of America on Euclid Avenue.
The robbery and killing was so detailed that Abbott, a 36-year-old African-American man, paid a professional makeup artist to disguise him as an elderly white man a day earlier.
A jury convicted him of the murder and recommended the death penalty Nov. 2 (see), and Kamansky finalized the deal in West Valley Superior Court.
