In reference to Li Peng's visit, the Slovakian daily Sme wrote that Premier Mikulas Dzurinda did not have the guts to say that the Slovak government cannot agree with the persecution of political opponents and execution of political prisoners in China. The Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party, Frantisek Sebej, said that he regarded the reception of Chinese Parliament Chairman Li Peng by "Slovakia's highest-ranking officials as a gross mistake damaging its good name in the democratic world."
