In the past, attempts to reinstate capital punishment in Wisconsin focused on child killers, cop killers and multiple murderers. They all failed. This time, the effort to bring the death penalty back to the state after a 150-year absence is part of a proposal to fight terrorism. Wisconsin is among 12 states that does not have capital punishment. The anti-terrorism bill introduced in the state Legislature recently includes a provision that would create death by lethal injection as a possible penalty for adults who commit murder with the purpose of causing terror. Among the 15 co-sponsors of the bill are Sen. Robert Welch, R, and Alan Lasee, R, who authored several unsuccessful death penalty bills in the past. However, Lasee sees little chance for it to be approved because of Democratic opposition.
