In their closing argument at the Hiroshima District Court, Japan, prosecutors pushed for the death penalty for Kiyotaka Oyama, 43, saying he ''planned how to spend insurance money even before the death of his stepfather, which is disgustingly inhumane. He is completely beyond being reformed.'' Oyama was accused of hitting his stepfather Tsutomu, then 66, on the head with a dumbbell in Hiroshima in October 1998 in a bid to obtain 70 million yen in insurance money. Tsutomu died in January 1999. In March 2000, he allegedly drowned his wife Hiromi, 38, in the bathtub at their home in the city to obtain 3 million yen in insurance money. The prosecutors said Oyama and his stepfather had differing views over the management of his company and his wife was pushing him for a divorce. During the trial, Oyama admitted to the killings but denied the motive for the murders was to get insurance money.
