In total, there are seven men still behind bars in Western Australia who were originally sentenced to death. Until the death penalty was abolished in 1984, the mandatory sentence for wilful murder was capital punishment but it was common practice for governments to issue a reprieve and order the prisoner to serve their time in jail.
