INDIA. PUDR CALLS FOR ABOLITION OF DEATH PENALTY IN INDIA

the People’s Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) called for the abolition of death penalty in India calling it an archaic form of punishment which upheld the ''savage'' norm of an eye-for-an-eye and violated the right to life, a principle on which humane civilization rested.
In a statement released on the occasion of the world day against the death penalty, the PUDR urged President A P J Abdul Kalam and Governors of all the states of India to commute the death sentences of all people awaiting hanging in the country.
''While we welcome the efforts of the Indian Government at the highest level to seek the commutation of the death sentence awarded to Sarabjit Singh for allegedly causing bomb explosions resulting in deaths in Pakistan, the Government of India studiously ignores those on death row in India itself,'' it said.
