INDIA REACTS GUARDEDLY TO SADDAM'S HANGING

India reacted guardedly to the hanging of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, saying the death sentence required the "credible due process of law."
"Such life and death decisions require credible due process of law, which does not appear to be victor's justice and is acceptable to the people of Iraq as well as the international community," Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in a statement.
"We hope that this verdict will not add to the suffering of the people of Iraq," the foreign minister said, "India has always stood for a peaceful resolution of the problems of Iraq."
His ruling Congress party also issued an equally-guarded statement but India's powerful Marxists, who offer crucial legislative support to Mukherjee's government in parliament denounced the death sentence.
"This is nothing but a totally rigged verdict delivered after a farcical trial," the Communist Party of India-Marxist said in a statement after the former Iraqi leader was sentenced to death for ordering the massacre of 148 Shiite residents of the village of Dujail in the 1980s.
