INDIA: SC CAUTIONS GOVERNMENT AGAINST SITTING ON MERCY PLEAS

the Indian Supreme Court advised the government to expeditiously dispose of mercy pleas of prisoners sentenced to death. Justices Harjit Singh Bedi and JM Panchal said there were “26 mercy petitions before the President of India, in some cases, where the courts awarded the death sentences more than a decade ago.”
