the Kollam Ad Hoc I Sessions Court in India’s Kerala state sentenced to death Binitha Kumari, 35, and her lover Raju, 38, for the murder of the Binitha’s husband Vidhukumaran Thampi on April 18, 2000.
Execution of the sentence was subject to confirmation by the Kerala High Court.
Thampi owned a provision store near the Pangode Military Camp. According to the Prosecution, his wife, Binitha, developed a love affair with Raju, a nursing assistant at the camp. When the affair came to Thampi's notice, he moved, together with his wife, to Mundakkal in Kollam city. However, the affair continued and Binitha wanted a divorce.
Binitha secretly administered an overdose of an epilepsy drug to Thampi on April 15, 2000. When he swooned, Binitha alerted Raju, but by the time of his arrival Thampi had regained consciousness. They then took him to Raju’s house and three days later injected him with a fatal dose of poison. Thampi’s body was then packed into the boot of a car and thrown into a deep crevice in Ooty. Following a police investigation the two confessed under interrogation.
