with the rising crimes against women in Meghalaya, several women’s organisations demanded the death penalty against the arrested people involved in the killing of two women. The women organisations included the Civil Society Women Organisation (CSWO), Hynniewtrep Indigenous Women Society (HIWS) and Khasi Women Welfare and Development Association (KWWADA). Meghalaya State Women Commission Chairperson Susana Marak admitted that the women in Meghalaya are no longer safe due to the rising crimes against women. ''Hanging a person guilty of rape will surely send a clear signal to others in society that those indulging in such wrong-doings would meet a similar fate. This certainly serves as a deterrent for others,'' CSWO President Agnes Kharshiing said. Echoing CSWO's opinion, KWWADA General Secretary Nebi Lyngwa said atrocities on women are rising and most often, those responsible manage to go scot-free. ''They should face the noose to ensure justice to the family members of the victims,'' she said.
