INDONESIA. ASSEMBLY CHIEF CALLS FOR DEATH PENALTY FOR GRAFT OFFENCES

the head of Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly, Hidayat Nurwahid, called for tough punishment including the death penalty to eradicate deep-rooted corruption in the country.
Nurwahid said the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono could learn something from the harsh measures taken by the Chinese government against those guilty of corruption.
“One lesson we can take up and adopt is to directly give very strong punishment to corruptors without long-winded legal procedures in court which will finally only acquit the corruptors," Nurwahid said.
The use of the death penalty was acceptable, he said, adding that the country's largest Islamic movement the Nahdlatul Ulama condoned the use of the death sentence for serious corruption offences. "Heavy punishment can also be imposed on corruptors by seizing their economic assets," he said.
