INDONESIA. BALI BOMBERS LODGE LEGAL CHALLENGE

Indonesia's government reiterated that the three Bali bombers on death row will soon be executed, despite a desperate last-ditch legal challenge. Lawyers for Islamic militants Amrozi, his brother Mukhlas and Imam Samudra formally lodged a challenge to Indonesia's death penalty laws in the Constitutional Court in Jakarta. They argue execution by firing squad amounts to torture, because prisoners might not die straight away, and so is unconstitutional. But the move is seen as a delaying tactic, as the court has no power to stop the execution. The three have exhausted all their legal options, and are due to be executed imminently for their roles in the 2002 Bali terrorist attacks which killed 202 people.
