INDONESIA. DEATH PENALTY SOUGHT FOR BALI NINE 'RINGLEADER'

Prosecutors in Bali asked judges in Denpasar District Court to sentence Australian national Andrew Chan to death if they found him guilty of organising the so-called Bali nine heroin trafficking conspiracy.
Chan, 21, nodded and looked calm as the prosecutors read out the death sentence request that had been expected from the start of the case.
The prosecutors told the court that as the organiser of the plot and having failed to admit to the crime, Chan deserved to be sent to the firing squad.
Prosecutor Oloan Nainggolan recommended that judges declare Chan "guilty of illegally exporting first-class narcotics in an organised way" and that they "hand down the death sentence on the defendant".
Earlier in the week, prosecutors asked for the same maximum sentence in the case of alleged fellow ringleader Myuran Sukumaran.
In the case of six other Australians, prosecutors asked for life sentences.
And in the case of the sole woman arrested, 28-year-old Renae Lawrence, prosecutors had asked judges to impose a 20-year jail term. Under Indonesian law, judges are not obliged to impose the sentences requested by prosecutors.
