Indonesian security forces began a fresh wave of arrests or killings of independence supporters in the provinces of Aceh and Irian Jaya. In eastern Irian Jaya, the arrests netted nearly the entire senior leadership of the territory's main pro-independence body, the Papua Presidium. Eight Papuans attempting to defend the raising of an independence flag were shot and killed by Indonesian troops, who also moved against the rebel group's rudimentary armed militias.
