Italy’s deputy foreign minister Ugo Intini stigmatised the news of Saddam Hussein's death sentence, upheld by an Iraqi appeal court on December 26, and expressed his support to Marco Pannella who, by a way of protest, had started a hunger and thirst strike. "Pannella's initiative rightly points out that Saddam Hussein's death sentence is profoundly wrong both on the ethical and political levels" Intini said in an interview with Radio Radicale. "Iraq needs peace to be sowed rather than hate" he said, "it needs rights rather than violence. Saddam's death sentence goes in the opposite direction".
