IRAN. SENTENCES OF EXECUTION BY STONING REVERSED FOR TWO IRANIAN WOMEN

branch 15 of Iran's Supreme Court ordered the dismissal of charges of "adultery" in the cases of Parisa and Najaf Akbari. The order, expected to be carried out by the court in the city of Shiraz, spared them from being stoned to death.
Instead, the Supreme Court set the women's punishment at 99 lashes each, and additionally ordered Najaf to be transferred to the city of Yazd, where she was to spend the next 5 years in exile from her home-town of Shiraz. In issuing the order, the Court explained that the women's original sentences were contrary to religious and civil laws.
