IRAQ: IS MILITANTS KILL LEADING IRAQI FEMALE HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER

Islamic State (IS) militants publicly killed a leading lawyer and human rights defender in the Iraqi city of Mosul after finding her guilty of apostasy in a self-styled Islamic court, reported the Gulf Center for Human Rights (GCHR).
Samira Saleh al-Naimi was seized by masked men from her home on 17 September after allegedly posting messages on Facebook that were critical of the militants’ destruction of places of worship in Mosul, calling them “acts of barbarism”.
Then, on 22 September evening, a group of masked IS fighters opened fire and killed al-Naimi in a public square in the center of Mosul.
Samira Saleh al-Naimi was known as a defender of the poor and detained, and an outspoken critic of the extremist Islamic State group.
“By torturing and executing a female human rights’ lawyer and activist, defending in particular the civil and human rights of her fellow citizens in Mosul, ISIL continues to attest to its infamous nature, combining hatred, nihilism and savagery, as well as its total disregard of human decency,” Nickolay Mladenov, the U.N. envoy to Iraq, said in a statement.
The extremist Islamic State group seized Iraq’s second largest city Mosul in June during its rapid advance across the country’s north and west. It has imposed a harsh version of Islamic law in areas under its control in Iraq and Syria.
