The so-called Karbala governor for al-Qaeda is among eight al-Qaeda leaders sentenced to death in Iraq on terror charges by Karbala’s Criminal Court.
Deputy Karbala Governor Abbas al-Mussawi told AKnews the al-Qaeda militants were found guilty by the court for seven bombings in the province.
Mussawi identified one of them by his first name as Haidar N. He was known as the Karbala governor for al-Qaeda, he said.
“They were convicted for bombing three fuel stations and three other recent bombings in the city which claimed the lives of 200 people," said Mussawi.
"In addition to bombings that targeted the Arbainiyah visitors last year.”
The court decision is final and cannot appealed, said Mussawi.
Karbala is one of the religious tourist destinations that attract millions of Shiite visitors every year, in particular during the Arbainiyah ceremonies when Shiite Muslims mourn the death of Imam Hussein, grandson of the prophet of Islam.
