Iraqi Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani urged the special court which began trying ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in Baghdad not to sentence him to death.
"Saddam Hussein is one of the world's worst criminals. He is responsible for the deaths of millions of people. He massacred us Kurds and burned and destroyed our towns," Talabani told the left-of-centre Italian daily La Repubblica in an interview.
"But I am a lawyer and, as such, I believe he should not be sentenced to death," he added.
