It was reported that Amnesty International had stepped up a campaign to save 10 people on death row in Indonesia. Amongst the condemned were two Thai nationals - sentenced to death in Indonesia along with the Indian Ayodhya Prasad Dubey who had already been executed on August 5 for a 1994 drug trafficking offence -- and eight others facing execution in the country. The two Thais, one a 62-year-old man and the other a 32-year-old woman, had asked Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri for presidential pardon. But their petitions were rejected in July 2004. The Indonesian prosecutor's office was said to have publicly stated that final preparations were being made for their executions.
Amnesty International also discovered that along with the two Thais, eight others faced imminent execution in Indonesia. Besides three Indonesians, they included a Pakistani, 36-year-old Muhammad Abdul Hafez, a Nepalese, 24-year-old Indra Bahadur Tamanag, two Nigerians and a Malawi national.
The rights body had started a signature campaign to stay the death sentences. It is petitioning the Indonesian president as well as attorney general and the Thai ambassador to Indonesia.
