the Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the motion presented by Sergio D’Elia, Secretary of Hands Off Cain and MP for the Rosa nel Pugno party, entrusting the government to present the resolution for a moratorium on capital executions at the next UN General Assembly.
Following the measure, Hands Off Cain leaders Sergio D’Elia, Secretary, and Treasurer Elisabetta Zamparutti stated:
“Today’s unanimous approval of the resolution entrusting the government to present at the forthcoming UN General Assembly the resolution for a moratorium on capital executions marks a crucial moment in the campaign by Hands Off Cain and the Transnational Radical Party to put an end to the death penalty".
"A convergence of groups in the Italian Parliament, belonging both to the majority and to the opposition, today expressed their great conviction and determination to have our country resume its UN based initiative in order to assure full success in obtaining the objective of a universal moratorium on executions. It is important to have decided of to act in consultation with European partners without, however, being bound to a European consensus. As the abolitionist movement is these days not only based in Europe, this will allow the initiative to be an expression of a coalition of states representative of all continents.”
