Italy was a cosponsor and voted in favor of the resolution on the death penalty approved by the UN Commission on Human Rights on April 28 (1999/61). It also cosponsored the resolution on the same issue presented by the European Union at the 54th UN General Assembly (A/C.3/54/L.8/Rev.1). Italy was among the countries in favor of a compromise on the resolution on the death penalty and supported the adoption of the Mexican amendment (see Mexico).
