JAMAICAN PARLIAMENT TO REVISIT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN SEPTEMBER

the Jamaican Government says it will soon make known its position on the execution of convicted killers. Prime Minister Bruce Golding told Parliament that his administration would reveal by September where it stood on the issue of capital punishment. The last execution took place in 1998. Golding said legislators of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) would be afforded a conscience vote when the matter is debated in Parliament after the summer recess. The prime minister has already indicated that his administration would seek to fast track arrangements for carrying out the death penalty, which remains on the law books.
