Japan expressed readiness to maintain its system of capital punishment, despite calls from various countries to reconsider its stance. Makio Miyagawa, deputy permanent representative of Japan to the UN office in Geneva, indicated at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council that Japan is not in a position ''to consider granting a moratorium on executions or to abolish the death penalty,'' according to a report issued by the council.
