John Yancey Schmitt was executed by injection tonight for the capital murder of a bank guard during a robbery.
Schmitt, 33, was pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m..
Shelton Earl Dunning, 39, was shot to death by Schmitt during the Feb. 17, 1999, robbery of the NationsBank branch in Bon Air.
Schmitt claimed he shot Dunning accidentally as the 2 struggled over Schmitt's weapon.
Schmitt becomes the 4th condemned inmate to be executed this year in Virginia, the 52nd in the USA and the 1056th overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
