Jordan's Court of Cassation upheld death sentence by hanging against 5 members of the "Irbid terrorist cell" case.
The extremists were convicted of a number of acts, including the death of an officer, making explosives, possession of arms and ammunition with the intent to be used in 'terrorism' acts, conspiracy to commit 'terror' attacks and the promotion of the ideology of a 'terror' organization. The State Security Court (SSC) on December 28, 2016 sentenced the five men to death by hanging.
The SSC also handed prison terms ranging from 3 to 15 years to another 15 defendants who were found guilty. The men were arrested in March last year, after Jordanian Intelligence forces uncovered and stopped a Daesh plot to target civilians and military in Amman. Forces attempted to negotiate with them to surrender peacefully but the militants instigated a firefight that killed one Jordanian police officer, Rashed Hassan Zyood, and wounded seven others. Thirteen militants were arrested and seven were killed. Explosive devices, automatic weapons, and suicide belts were found in the apartment.
