JORDAN: MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER

In Jordan, the Criminal Court sentenced a Jordanian to death and an Egyptian to 20 years in prison for robbing, murdering and burning a 70-year-old man in February 2011.
The court found 38-year-old A.W. guilty of strangling to death Yousef Salman, the general manager of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) office in Amman, and handed him the maximum punishment.
The Egyptian defendant, J.S., 41, was convicted of complicity in premeditated murder and was handed a 20-year prison term for his role in the murder.
Court papers said the Jordanian defendant worked as a financial manager at the YMCA, while the Egyptian was a guard at the same office.
The tribunal comprised judges Hayel Amr, Talal Aqrabawi and Ayman Ghzawi.
The two defendants had pled not guilty to the charges during their opening trial.
The verdicts will automatically be reviewed by the Cassation Court within the next 30 days.
