Jurors recommended death by lethal injection for Roderick Byrd for his capital murder convictions in a Nov. 24, 2005 triple slaying at a motel during a robbery. Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Bill Cole set sentencing for Aug. 6 for the 23-year-old Byrd. The dead included the motel clerk, Kim Olney, 28, and 2 motel guests, John Aylesworth, 42, and Dorothy Smith, 58. Byrd, who is borderline mentally retarded, blamed the shootings on his co-defendant, Brandon Deon Mitchell, who was sentenced to death by Cole on January 17 for the killings.
