Justice Augustine Kania of the High Court has convicted and sentenced to death a Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) an Local Defence Unit (LDU) soldier after finding them guilty of murder. Justice Kania said that prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that RA Private Isaac Tumusiime, a.k.a "China" attached to the 59th battalion of the Mountain Brigade had on the night of 6.1.2000 at around 11.00 p.m., while at Trans-Africa Holiday Inn in Kasese town, murdered David Bitwire. The Kasese Resident State Attorney, Charles Ngabirano, led prosecution. Private Tumusiime becomes the third person to be sentenced to death after an LDU, Zephaniah Majani Baluku and Sulait Achema. Justice Kania advised the convicts to appeal to the Uganda Court of Appeal within 14 days from the date of judgment if they are not satisfied with his verdict.
