Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk said that the abolition of the death penalty would not bring any changes to the imprisonment of Abdullah Ocalan, the head of the terrorist organization, on Imrali Island, and he would continue to be held there for security reasons.
Questioned on extradition requests, Turk said Turkey would repeat calls for the extradition of criminals that had been refused because of the existence of death penalty in Turkey.
Turk said: "I am not in a position to say a number, but there are those among them like Fehriye Erdal."
He pointed out that the abolition of the death sentence would lift obstacles in the fight against terrorism in Turkey
"Those who committed crime in Turkey were saved when they fled from Turkey. This obstacle in fight against terrorism will be removed."
