Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan said Turkey's decision to delay his execution was a step towards its democratisation and European Union membership and called for cool heads to avoid a return to violence. "If there is progress, then the PKK will behave positively," Ocalan said, calling for democratic reform in Turkey and urging the ruling parties to think of national interests rather than short-term gains. "If some groups break this then fighting could take place...this is not in the interests of society and the future," he said.
