Kuwaiti authorities publicly displayed the corpse of Fazel Shirin Mohammad Sherif, 35, a Pakistani heroin trafficker who was hanged in front of the interior ministry in Kuwait City in the fourth execution of a drug dealer since the introduction in 1995 of a law imposing the death penalty for trafficking.
Sherif was hanged behind closed doors and, after he was pronounced dead, some 300 male spectators were allowed to view his dangling, limp body.
The convict took 20 minutes to die, Kuwait's public prosecutor Najeeb al-Mulla told reporters at the scene.
Mulla and top police and judicial officials attended the hanging. It was the first time the public had been admitted to see an executed drug trafficker in Kuwait.
Three Bangladeshi men, convicted of murder, were hanged in public in 2002.
