Latin America in 2001 again garnered the infamous record for the highest number of human rights advocates "under threat of death or summary executions," the annual report of human rights organizations stated.
As many union members were killed in Colombia in 2001(150), as were murdered in the entire rest of the world, according to the findings of the report, which was drafted and released by the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues and the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders.
Additionally, at least 10 members of non-governmental organizations were killed in 2001 in Colombia and the human rights situation continues to deteriorate, the organizations documented.
Those who combat impunity (especially in Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras, but also in Chile and Argentina) or defend the rights of indigenous populations and landless peasants (such as in Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia and Argentina), union freedom (Colombia and Venezuela) and groups such as street children are the most vulnerable, the report stated.
