Lebanese former Finance Minister Georges Corm, said that the death sentence by stoning passed on Amina Lawal by a Nigerian Sharia Court did not serve the cause of Islam.
He told the Panafrican News Agency that the provisions of Sharia (Islamic Law) regarding the death sentence for adultery, were not met in the case of Amina, who was condemned for having a child outside marriage. "The provisions of the Sharia on the death penalty in case of adultery are very clear. They are often hard to meet, and serve often to dissuade...," Corm added.
He said the debate is not on what the West thinks about Islam in Nigeria or its application, but on giving the religion an "image closer to the reality in the Koran". "If the Prophet (Mohammed) himself happens to come back today, he would have something to say about the death sentence pronounced by Islamic tribunals in Nigeria, against women who commit adultery," said Corm.
