LEBANON: HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE CHIEF REJECTS DEATH PENALTY

In Lebanon, Head of the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee Michel Moussa called for rethinking the viability of capital punishment.
Moussa made the comments in a statement marking World Day against the Death Penalty.
“We should think through several questions, the answers to which might lead us to reassess the death penalty,” he said.
“Despite the fact that our society sees a lot of individual and group crimes, there are several questions that need to be addressed: First, does any party have the right to take the life of another, separate from the party who granted that life in the first place?
Can the authorities find no other means to punish criminals without resorting to the death penalty?” he asked.
