Li Guangqiang, a Hong Kong businessman who smuggled 33,000 bibles to China in 2000, may face the death penalty for practicing unauthorized religious worship, the Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said.
Li, 38, provided Bibles to Yu Zhudi, a leader of a Christian group known as Shouters, and group members that were brought from Hong Kong to the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian.
The human rights organization, headquartered in Hong Kong, estimates that around 16 Christian organizations as well as the Falun Gong spiritual group are considered unauthorized religious sects, whose leaders risk being sentenced to death.
