Liga Veneta (northern autonomist party) senator Antonio Serena tabled a parliamentary question to the Prime Minister probing the ethics of having photographs of American death row prisoners plastered on billboards all over Italian cities. Serena questioned whether the latest Benetton advertising campaign ran counter to human rights legislation. The advertisements "breach the death row prisoners' most basic rights, sanctioned by international treaties and the most elementary common sense and ethics of a civil society," the senator said. He demanded that Benetton and photographer Oliviero Toscani "pay compensation to the families of the convicts, who without being aware of it, had been exposed to ridicule by those who presume to teach morality."
