Lionell Rodriguez was executed this evening for the fatal shooting almost 17 years ago of a woman during a carjacking. He was pronounced dead at 6:19 p.m..
Rodriguez was 19 when, in Sept. 1989, he and his cousin, James Gonzales, killed Tracy Gee, 22 in order to steal the girl’s car. Gonzales, was stopped by police soon after for a broken taillight and confessed to the killing, telling officers Mr. Rodriguez was the gunman. Mr. Gonzales received a 40-year prison term.
Rodriguez's conviction was overturned by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 1993 because of a procedural problem in jury selection. The following year, he was convicted a 2nd time and again sentenced to death. Rodriguez becomes the 16th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Texas, the 24th in the USA and the 1081st overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
