Lithuanians would like the death sentence back in the country. Only one third of local residents feel safe in the country, while nearly 73 percent would vote for the return of capital punishment for major crimes, public opinion research showed. The said indicator is lower only in Russia, out of six East European nations. Sociology experts underlined that the majority in Lithuania believes only the death sentence for especially brutal crimes would boost security and curtail criminality in the country. The death penalty was abolished in Lithuania in 1998.
