Luxembourg was a cosponsor and voted in favor of the resolution on the death penalty approved by the UN Commission on Human Rights on April 28 (1999/61).
Speaking at the UNCHR, Ms Lidye Err, Minister of State For Foreign Affairs, said that Luxembourg attached considerable importance to the draft resolution introduced by the European Union calling for the abolition of capital punishment - a legalized form of execution - or at least the suspension of its use, particularly in respect of minors and mentally handicapped persons.
Luxembourg was also a cosponsor of the resolution for the moratorium on executions presented by the European Union at the 54th UN General Assembly (A/C.3/54/L.8/Rev.1).
