Malawi President Bakili Muluzi has urged the Nigerian government to pardon Amina Lawal Kurami, a woman sentenced to death by stoning having a child outside of wedlock. In a statement issued by the State House Press Office, President Bakili Muluzi described the planned stoning as outdated and barbaric. Muluzi stated that time for democratic countries stoning people convicted of various offences was over, adding that such a brutal and inhumane punishment would not only damage the human rights reputation and record of Nigeria but of the entire African continent.
