MALAYSIA: SALESMAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING

A water filter salesman was sentenced to death by the High Court in Malaysia for trafficking in 8,445gm of cannabis two years ago.
Judge Amelia Tee Hong Geok Abdullah also sentenced Muhammad Ridzuan Ab Majid, 33, to 10 years' imprisonment and 10 strokes of the cane after he was found guilty on the second charge, for drug possession.
Muhammad Ridzuan was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on June 12, 2012.
On the drug trafficking charge, Muhammad Ridzuan was charged with committing the offence at Block 166-04-04, Rumah Pangsa Sri Pangkor, Sentul Pasar, Sentul at 5.45pm on June 12, 2012.
He was also charged with possession of 106.9gm of the drug at the same place and time.
Deputy public prosecutor Faizah Mohd Salleh, when asking for the court to impose a heavy sentence on the accused for drug possession said that based on the facts of the case, the drug was found hidden under his daughter's bed.
"He is not only a drug trafficker, but also a risk to his family members," she added.
In mitigation, Muhammad Ridzuan's lawyer, Azi Azlin Zulkifli, said it was her client's first offence and that he had a wife, a four-year-old daughter and parents to support.
