Marco Cappato, Lista Bonino MEP, together with Italian Ambassador Marcello Ricoveri and vice President of the Commission of Human Rights of the Nigerian Chamber of Deputies Hon. Abdul Oroh, met with the Foreign Minister, the Justice Minister and with President Olusegun Obasanjo.
President Obasanjo said that "Nigeria isn't perfect when it comes to human rights, but it is by far not the worst country in the world , as it is often considered".
Regarding the death penalty Obasajo reminded that he had once been sentenced to death, and since then he has wanted to have nothing to do with capital punishment.
He said that if, as President, he doesn't manage to abolish it, he would continue later by other means.
President Obasanjo continued by saying: "I'm in favour of the abolition of the death penalty and want to do all I can.
With regards to the UN moratorium resolution on executions, it is a good and worthy idea which I will take care of.
I am personally in favour of such an initiative and as President believe I have the responsibility of bringing about debate on this matter".
