Mauritius has been abolitionist since 1995 when the Death Penalty Act 1995 amended the Constitution to abolish the death penalty. No more death sentences were passed after 1995.
The last execution took place in 1987.
On December 19, 2016 Mauritius, as in 2014, 2012 and 2010, was absent during the vote on the Resolution on a Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty at the UN General Assembly. In 2008 and 2007, it co-sponsored and voted in favor.
On 17 december 2018, Mauritius voted in favour of the Resolution on a Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty at the UN General Assembly.
