Mexican President Vicente Fox said he had pressed Cuban President Fidel Castro to abolish the death penalty in Cuba. He said the issue was "fundamental" for the protection of Mexican nationals, and that Cuba's abolition of capital punishment - by firing squad - would be an important gesture.
Fox spent four hours in private talks with Castro during an official visit to Cuba intended to herald a new stage in Cuban-Mexican relations and build trade between the two nations.
