Mexico was a cosponsor and voted in favor of the resolution on the death penalty approved by the UN Commission on Human Rights on April 28 (1999/61).
The Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions said fewer allegations were sent in 1998 to Mexico regarding violations of the right to life but the human rights situation in the country remains worrying, especially in light of recent killings in Chiapas. (E/CN.4/1999/39/Add.1).
Mexico also cosponsored the resolution for a moratorium on executions presented by the European Union at the 54th UN General Assembly (A/C.3/54/L.8/Rev.1).
