Mexico's Supreme Court of Justice (SCJN) ruled in favour of denying any extradition request on the part of the United States that did not include a pledge not to sentence the extradited individual to life in prison. The judges noted that Mexico's International Extradition Law demands that the requesting country promise "not to impose life sentences on those extradited," as such punishment is prohibited in Article 22 of the Mexican Constitution. In its ruling, the SCJN insisted that when the United States submitted an extradition request to Mexico, it must promise not to impose a sentence that was not provided for under Mexican law, especially the death penalty, and also life imprisonment, both of which are allowed in the United States.
